Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) Garage Lights are an innovative way to replace the high cost of halogen or incandescent lighting with the low cost and low heat of light emitting diodes. In doing so a person can save at least a third of the cost of their electric bill over the course of a year. Since 2012, companies have begun to produce LED garage lighting options in many options to homeowners and commercial parking garages that cover almost every imaginable option and the possibilities are endless.
How do LED garage lights work? Basically, they work by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material. There is no filament as in an incandescent or halogen bulb. They last as long as a transistor, or about 6 times longer than an incandescent light bulb. That translates into savings for a consumer. Just about every type of bulb, from the fluorescent to the halogen spotlight is being refitted and advertised as brighter, cooler and more efficient than it’s predecessor!
Let’s review some of the products:
1. Residential light fixtures available: Fluorescent light fixtures such as those that are typically found in the home garage can be replaced with LED light strips. LEDs allow you to keep your fixtures and simply replace the bulbs with LED lights, bypassing the ballast. You replace a 1000w fixture with a 300w equivalent, which will burn brighter yet cooler. You will feel that your garage has much clearer, brighter light color and you can even control the color of the light from warm to cool. The LED bulbs cost double but you will recoup your cost in about a year in lower electricity bills, and you will not replace these bulbs for over 5 years!
2. Commercial garage installations are also much cheaper and offer similar energy savings over the long haul. Perhaps the other convenience for commercial convenience is that replacements do not happen typically for 5 to ten years. Fixtures mimic the typical light sizes of garage installations. Lights are commonly brighter and so eliminate dark corners or pockets that are often found in commercial garages.
3. What is the “down-side” with LED installations? If everything is about energy efficiency, low-heat, low replacement time and cost, good return on investment, why isn’t everyone replacing with LEDs? We did our research and found a little advertised but important concern: Since LEDs are electron based, they emit a frequency, and as a result, they cause interference, to cell phones, and to other equipment that runs on radio waves, such as your garage door opener. A popular blog found that many people, having gone to the trouble of expensive LED installations, couldn’t use their garage door openers! This accounted for major disappointment in homeowners, who also found that dimmer switches did not work. The site offered some suggestions.
